Plasma is considered to be the fourth state of matter, the first three being solid, liquid and gas. For a long time we thought there were only those three, but obviously, we were wrong. And yet, we see plasma everyday when we look at stars… Furthermore, about 99% of the visible universe is formed of plasma! But what is it exactly?
In short, plasma is a cloud of protons, neutrons and electrons in which all the electrons have come loose from their molecules and atoms. At first sight, it may seem like a gas, but it behaves very differently, precisely because its electrons are free to move, but also because it contains electrically charged particles. Those electrically charged particles are called “ionized”, and when enough atoms are ionized, it affects the electrical characteristics of the gas and then it becomes plasma.
We learned rapidly how to use plasma as a cutting technique, and it’s now a worldwide choice for this purpose. Plasma cutting is a process using a high speed jet of ionized gas that is concentrated in a constricting orifice. This method conducts electricity from the torch of the plasma cutter to the work piece in order to remove the molten metal. Actually, plasma cutting is fast, precise and easy (with proper gear and training, of course).
